Psychotherapy or "talk therapy" has been a mainstay of mental health treatment since the inception of psychiatry. Therapy has evolved, and continues to do so. With many different strategies therapists can utilize (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Supportive Psychotherapy, Motivational Interviewing, and many others) there is an approach that will be right for you. Therapy can not only help with processing traumas and/or stressors, it can also help us identify maladaptive thought processes or coping mechanisms and guide the development of strategies to alter these into ones that are more adaptive or helpful.
